Sean-Michael Green is an expert on topics related to higher education among non-traditional groups.

Sean-Michael was not a good student in high school. His grades were horrible (especially in Algebra II where he never wrote more than his name on an exam in his senior year), and he had no intention of going to college. Instead, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps.

He served four years on Active Duty, participating as a team member in a variety of successful missions. He served primarily as an Infantryman in 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines. In addition to two six-month "floats," he deployed to locations such as Panama, Cuba, and Iraq during the First Gulf War. After leaving Active Duty, he entered the Selected Marine Corps Reserve, where he served an additional six years. As a Marine, Sean-Michael evolved into a creative and effective leader.

Sean-Michael wandered into a community college after separating from Active Duty. His first semester was an experiment, and he had little hope that he would fare better in college than he did in high school. But he quickly learned that he loved learning and being a non-traditional student; he found so much money for school that he was making a profit attending college; and he discovered an aptitude for classroom and independent learning.

He transferred to the University of Pittsburgh, where he graduated the University Honors College, magna cum laude and as a member of Phi Beta Kappa. He continued his formal education at several other institutions. He earned several advanced degrees at the University of Pennsylvania and Cornell University, and he studied at institutions such as Columbia University and the Université Paris 1 (Panthéon-Sorbonne). He is currently earning a graduate degree in management at Carnegie Mellon University while he continues his professional career.

During his academic career, Sean-Michael developed an interest in combining his three passions: higher education, the military, and management. He began researching the topics with zeal and tackling projects that allowed him to explore these disciplines. He served on the faculty committee for Admissions and Financial Aid Policy at Cornell Law School, and he worked as a law clerk in Office of University Counsel at Cornell University. He volunteered with or created military groups at several universities. He spoke with military education officers, college admissions officers, government officials, and business leaders, exchanging and gathering information.

Professionally, Sean-Michael has more than a decade of experience as an entrepreneur and manager. After leaving Services and Solutions—a company that he created and managed for more than six years—and working as an IT Project Manager with Advanta Mortgage Company, Sean-Michael founded SES College Services. The company hired graduate students at the most selective and elite universities to serve as mentors to college applicants. The company, perhaps influenced by Sean-Michael's background, evolved into a boutique of services for non-traditional students. After more than three years with SES College Services, Sean-Michael joined the management team at The Princeton Review to help them work with the military.

In 2005, Sean-Michael became the Chief Executive Officer of Memories RPA, Inc. The company uses advanced technology to record, preserve, and archive the memories of families around the world. Sean-Michael leads a team of scientists, artists, and professionals.

Sean-Michael is a member of and leader in several other organizations. He is a volunteer and a member of the Board of Directors for Big Brothers Big Sisters. He previously served on the Board of Digital Briefing, Inc.; and he co-founded and served on the Executive Committee for Donna's Last Gift. He is a member of the Pittsburgh Young Professionals and several community-based groups. A licensed attorney in Pennsylvania, Sean-Michael is involved in various enterprises, including the American Bar Association and the Neighborhood Legal Services Association. Sean-Michael serves on the Allegheny County Bar Association’s Military and Veteran Affairs Committee, and he is also a member of the Pennsylvania Advisory Council on Military and Veteran Education.

Today, Sean-Michael consults and writes on a variety of topics in higher education, the military, and management. He is the author of Marching to College: Turning Military Experience into College Admissions (Random House 2004); What I Learned in College: A Year in the Ivy League (expected May 2006); a recurring column in The Griffon; and many other articles.
